    Overview

    Choquequirao is one of the largest and best preserved Inca archaeological fortresses in South America.
    The fortress of Machu Picchu is known worldwide, but what few people know is that the Incas also built another very similar and equally impressive citadel called “Choquequirao”, of which only less than 50% has been discovered and which receives a very low number of visitors.
    One of the reasons why few people visit Choquequirao is because to get to this citadel you have to walk 13 miles (26 miles round trip), which involves descending from 9,186 ft above sea level to 4,921 ft, and then climb back up to 9,843 ft, quite a challenge!

    Day A: Cuzco 11,155 ft (Walking around the city)

    We will give you a guided walking tour of about 04 hours approx. by the center of the city, this will depend on your availability at the time you arrive in the city of Cuzco. This tour is usually in the afternoon.

    Day 1 of 5: Cuzco 11,155 ft (3400m) – Chiquisca 6,693 ft (2040m)

    One day before the trek, be sure to make all the necessary preparations.
    Today you will be picked up at your accommodation between 6:00-7:00 am. Please be fully prepared with all your personal gear and have consumed your breakfast before boarding our transportation.
    Now, before starting this amazing adventure, we will take you by bus (04 hours) to the town of Cachora, where we will have lunch and you can buy some last minute snacks, water and cookies, etc.
    After lunch in Cachora, our transportation will continue its journey ten kilometers more until we reach the town of Capuliyoc; this will be the starting point of our dream adventure, the hike begins here.
    In Capuliyoc is where we meet our muleteers and horses that will help us all the way. This day we start our hike, it will be 4.3 miles (7km) of pure descent (03 hours approx) to Chiquisca, where we will have dinner and spend the night.

    Difficulty: Slightly gentle because it will be seven kilometers of pure downhill.

    Day 2 of 5: Chiquisca 6,693 ft (2040m) – Marampata 9,350 ft (2850m)

    Early after breakfast, from Chiquisca we continue descending until we reach 4,921 ft (Playa Rosalina), then we cross the Apurimac River and begin a very demanding ascent to Santa Rosa Baja where lunch awaits us.
    After lunch recharged with energy, we continue ascending through a steeper slope, zigzagging the trail, this climb takes about 4 hours approximately to the town of Maranpata, where we will have dinner and spend the night.

    Difficulty: A very physically demanding day, we are in for a great ascent.

    Day 3 of 5: Marampata 9,350 ft (2850m) – Choquequirao 10,171 ft (3100m) – Marampata 9,350 ft (2850m)

    This morning we start our 02 hour hike to reach the fortress of Choquequirao; this is one of the most anticipated days because we will have the whole morning to enjoy a guided tour of the majestic architectural complex, here we will take a guided walk through this spectacular stone citadel, twin sister of Machu Picchu, its enigmatic squares and rituals that are still a mystery to researchers.
    After lunch we will return in the afternoon to Marampata to spend the night and return to Chiquisca the next day.

    Difficulty: Today will also be a very exhausting day, 6.2 miles (10km) of hiking between ascents and descents.

    Day 4 of 5: Marampata 9,350 ft (2850m) – Chiquisca 6,693 ft (2040m)

    After breakfast we start our return, now with an intense descent to Playa Rosalina and then climb about three kilometers to Chiquisca, where we will spend the night to finish the last stretch the next day.

    Difficulty: Relaxing at first because it will be about 3.7 miles (6km) downhill, but then 1.8 miles (3km) more uphill await us.

    Day 5 of 5: Chiquisca 6,693 ft (2040m) – Cachora 9,514 ft (2900m) – Cuzco 11,155 ft (3400m)

    We start early to arrive at the starting point “Capuliyoc” where our transportation will be waiting for us to return to Cuzco.
    Once again on the way we will observe the exotic flora and fauna, as well as the views of majestic snow-capped peaks and the impressive Apurimac canyon. In Capuliyoc our transportation will be waiting for us to take us to the town of Cachora where we will have lunch, and then we will continue our journey to the city of Cuzco. You will be transferred to your hotel of origin.

    Difficulty: The body is already tired, but we have to be strong for the last 4.3 miles (7km) climb.

    Travel Insurance

    It is a condition of booking with Made In Mountain that you have adequate valid travel insurance. It is your responsibility to take out adequate travel insurance and to ensure that you have read and understood all the terms and conditions of your travel insurance policy to ensure that you are covered for all activities you intend to undertake during the tour, including all optional activities. Your insurance policy should fully cover you for medical expenses and emergency repatriation to your home country.
    In case of medical emergencies, illness or injury your insurance should cover the entire duration of your vacation. If you are trekking at high altitude, make sure there is no upper altitude limit that may limit or exclude coverage for your trip.

    Maximum altitude

    In this adventure you will reach 3000 meters above sea level, cold and tropical climate typical of the Peruvian Andes, in most of the day you can reach temperatures around 15 degrees Celsius on average.

    Altitude information

    This trip is at an altitude where there is a risk of being affected by acute mountain sickness (AMS), a common and generally harmless condition caused by reduced air pressure and lower oxygen concentration. While the itinerary has been specifically designed to allow your body to acclimatize gradually, the rate of onset and severity, as well as the altitude at which AMS develops, can vary greatly among individuals; being physically fit offers no special protection. If symptoms develop during your trip, you should report them to your Made In Mountain leader immediately.
    Travelers with heart or lung conditions, anemia, asthma, high blood pressure, or who are taking the birth control pill should seek advice from their primary care physician and specifically mention the maximum altitude the trip reaches (refer to the trip itinerary). Bring your travel notes to your medical appointment so that your physician has all the details of your trip.
    You should have adequate travel insurance for your trip. Make sure that your insurance policy covers you up to the maximum altitude indicated above.

    Important for travel to Cuzco City

    During the high season of visitors from April to October (Andean summer) our reservations sell out quickly, so we recommend that you book your vacation well in advance of your planned travel date, at least 5 to 6 months in advance when possible.

    About flight delays

    Made In Mountain does not currently include international flights from your home city in its itineraries, so it is very important that you schedule your arrival in Lima, Peru 1 or 2 days prior to the start of your tour to avoid delays with your itinerary.

    Vaccinations

    Due to the current COVID-19 situation, visa and vaccination requirements are subject to change and you should inquire before traveling.
    At present, in the current year 2022, the Peruvian Government requires to show the vaccination card for access to public places.
    In Peru, in addition to the COVID-19 vaccine, no other vaccines are mandatory, but we recommend protection against typhoid fever, tetanus, polio and hepatitis A. Consult your travel clinic for the latest advice on malaria, dengue fever and Zika virus. Take preventive measures to avoid mosquito bites, which include mosquito repellent, as well as long pants and long-sleeved shirts to cover up when necessary.

    About camping tents

    You will be assigned a space in a shared tent of two, three or four people as organized by the main guide, but if you want more privacy and want a personal tent, this will have an additional cost of $ 40 dollars as a single payment for all the days of camping that we will have on the route.
    If you come as a couple or with friends a private tent can be assigned according to availability, so it is very important that you reserve the tour well in advance.

    Food in camping

    The food is varied, prioritizing good nutrition to keep you active throughout the trip.
    Your tour leader will contact you to ask you about your dietary preferences.

    To travel from the capital city of Lima to Cuzco (round trip) you must arrange your flights in advance, we suggest you arrive in the capital city of Lima one or two days prior to the start of your tour to avoid delays and inconveniences.
    The present itinerary only counts from your arrival in the city of Cuzco.

    Cuzco is a small city, but with a wide variety of hotel and gastronomic services due to the great touristic affluence it has. We always make the best effort to give you the best comfort and food when you are in this place; you will have a good internet access and the comforts with the primary services; our partners are the best that you can find in that city.

    Water

    Drinking water is provided. Tap water in Peru is not safe to drink; boiled and filtered drinking water is provided on the trek and elsewhere your leader will purchase large water containers so you can refill your bottle.

    Lodging, meals, flights or additional services

    If you have problems to book your lodging, flights from Lima to Cuzco, food, etc. or any additional service we can assist you, it is only important that you make your tour reservations well in advance. Cuzco is a city with very high demand for tourist services, the basic services are full almost all year round.

    What is Choquequirao?

    It is another “lost city of the Incas” also known as the sister of Machu Picchu, this citadel was officially rediscovered in the late twentieth century, located at 3,030 meters above sea level, on top of a mountain above the Apurimac River, in its surroundings you can see imposing snow-capped mountains such as the famous Salkantay and Humantay.
    The construction of Choquequirao is the work of the successors of the Inca Pachacutec, Tupac Inca Yupanqui (1471 – 1493) and Huayna Capac (1493 – 1527). The site used domestic and ceremonial ceramics of the classic Cuzco style, as well as others, typical of the population that moved to build and populate the site permanently.
    The Choquequirao fortress is located under the jurisdiction of the district of Santa Teresa, Province of La Convención, Department of Cuzco, in southern Peru.

    Is this Choquequirao Trek part of what is commercially known as the Inca Trail?

    No, what is commercially known as “Inca Trail” is a different trekking, it takes other locations, it is a different route that does not coincide with this route.

    What services would be missing from my tour to take my mind off all primary expenses?

    You would need to include flights, lodging and meals in the city, we do not include them in our tours for the following reasons:
    – Lodging in Lima and Cuzco: Each passenger has a different need (we only separate lodging in places where the options and offers are very reduced).
    – Food in town: The food preferences of each passenger is different, so we prefer you to explore the flavors of your preference (we only provide food in the camps when trekking).
    – Flights: You can book the airline of your preference, we know that there are complete offers from your country of origin.
    If you wish to include any of these services in your tour you should contact our travel agents so that they can assist you and include it in your tour pack.

    Will someone pick me up at the airport when I land in Lima, Peru from my home country?

    No, our service starts from your hotel in the city of Cuzco and the day you start your tour according to the schedule of the itinerary, from there, your tour leader will accompany you from end to end throughout your vacation until you return to your hotel of origin.
    While it is true that the tour leader accompaniment is exclusively for the tour itinerary, we also operate in the city of Lima, we are attentive to provide all the assistance and extra support you need, but keep in mind that expenses for extra care are not covered in this tour.

    How far is Choquequirao from the capital of Peru, Lima?

    This wonders are located in the city of Cuzco.
    Cuzco is located south of the capital of the department of Lima, capital of Peru. From Lima to Cuzco a commercial flight will take you in one hour, while if you go by bus you will arrive in approximately 24 hours.

    What to expect when trekking Choquequirao?

    The trekking route from the city of Cuzco to Choquequirao and from this point to Machu Picchu is the most complete and challenging route that exists in the ancient capital of the Incas.
    It goes through ancient Inca roads surrounded by the most picturesque landscapes. On average it covers 65 kilometers in 7 days and 6 nights of intense trekking and adventure.

    What is the best season to do this adventure?

    You can do this trekking any day of the year, however, the recommended season is between the months of April to October, this season is known as the “Andean Summer”, because there are no longer many weather impediments (rain, low temperatures, fog, etc.) to better enjoy the scenery.
    However, we all know how climate change has affected the behavior of the environment, so we cannot guarantee that an “Andean summer” will be one hundred percent perfect.
    We can only guarantee the best safety for you to enjoy a hike on any day of the year.

    What is the difficulty level of this walking tour?

    This trekking is demanding, due to the distance and elevation gain (see technical sheet), so we consider it as an advanced trekking level 4.
    Please measure your capabilities and experience in similar adventures before taking this tour.

    How fit should I be to do this walk?

    This is a challenging hike and should only be done by people in excellent physical condition and with previous experience in mountain trekking above 3000masl.
    This route is located in a remote and unforgiving part of the Andes, access to basic services is very limited, everything is provided by our organization, Made In Mountain will make sure you have the best experience in the mountains; although it is true, there are some hamlets and small towns along the way, they can provide some very basic services to tourists, so you should not have high expectations in this regard.

    Will I have internet access during the trip?

    During the journey in some specific places it is possible to have access to satellite internet (but we do not guarantee accessibility, because this depends on the contractual agreements that the villagers have with their service providers).
    Some localities also have electric energy from solar panels and artificial motors, but the electric energy is only for lighting, but not for recharging electronic devices.

    I am from another country, do I need any special permission to participate in this trek?

    No, you do not need any special permission, except for your Visa or Passport, your personal identification document. We will take care of everything else.

    In addition to the payment of this tour, do I have to make additional payments along the way?

    With the registration of your tour you will not have to worry about any primary expenses (entrance tickets to the parks, mobility, guide, etc.); since we pick you up at your hotel in the city of Cuzco, until we return you again, we take care of everything, transportation, lodging (with the exceptions mentioned in the summary table).
    Food in the city will have to be covered by you (we only provide food in the camps when trekking), secondary expenses such as souvenirs, handicrafts, alcoholic beverages, etc. will have to be covered by you.
    If you want additional services that are not included in this tour, then you must request it to our travel agents before hiring the tour.

    Will someone help me to get to Cuzco from Lima, how do I return to Lima from Cuzco?

    From the moment you hire our services we will assign you a specialized local tour leader who will accompany you throughout your vacation so that you will live an unforgettable experience without worries.
    We will accompany you from your hotel in the city of Cuzco (round trip).

    Please note that when you are in the cities of Lima and Cuzco the food will be on your own, we do this so that you can explore the flavors of your preference, in fact, you will always have the advice and recommendation of your tour leader.

    What are the camping facilities like?

    Our camping facilities have all the necessary requirements for you to enjoy the best comfort and tranquility; in addition to your tent (personal or shared if you come with friends), we provide you with a separate space to consume your food that also serves as a kitchen.

    What do I need to pack for this walking tour?

    Basically your personal gear such as your trekking clothes (pants, hiking boots, warm jackets, sunglasses, etc); once you agree to this tour we will send you in detail everything you will basically need to enjoy this adventure in the best condition.

    How many people can make up my walking group?

    Groups of up to a maximum of twelve people can be formed; our groups are always small, because we need you to live an unforgettable experience.

    If I am tired will I be able to ride a horse?

    Made In Mountain is a travel agency exclusively for trekking lovers, this tour is designed for you to enjoy an unforgettable trek, however we will always have mules for assistance and emergencies.
    Our itinerary is programmed so that you can arrive at each camp in the stipulated time and in the best conditions; we will walk at a moderate pace according to your abilities, and if the group is large there will be an assistant to accompany you.

    What happens if I get injured or get sick halfway and can no longer continue?

    If you suffer any physical injury during the journey of this adventure, our staff has the training and equipment necessary for first aid and to get you to safety.
    If you feel you can no longer continue at any point along the way, we have a plan to take you to the nearest town and bring you back to the city of Cuzco or Lima as needed.
    In both cases, for the reasons mentioned above, if you need to cut the road or cancel your itinerary to return to the city earlier than scheduled according to the itinerary, this will have an additional cost because it will require an unplanned extra mobilization and management.

    Can you provide more services that are not included in this tour?

    Yes, but it will be important that you coordinate it previously with one of our travel agents, preferably before hiring the tour to configure your trip in the best way.
